From the Captain of the
Fleet:
Hamburger Social
“We were over at Catalina and unfortunately
missed the hamburger social. The reports were that it was another successful
and fun evening. These ‘socials’ always attract a large gathering of members
and this was no exception. The food was good and plentiful and the weather was
so nice everyone gathered out on the deck.
“Our Next Meeting: Italian Pot Luck –
“Our Italian Pot Luck dinners always
provide an interesting and varied numbers of dishes created by or purchased by
our members. While food isn’t the reason to come, this menu does make for an
enjoyable evening. Who’s bringing the Chianti?
“Scott Jarema,
a new member with a Catalina 38, will speak to us at this meeting. He is a
consultant at Maritime Communications on
See you there.”
Your Fleet Captain, Hal Avery
It Happened at Marci’s
It was great to see familiar faces at this year's Marci's Champagne Dinghy Cruise and 3rd Annual First Ever Dinghy Wine Tasting Competition. Even better than that (if you believe this) is the fact that several new members and even some potential members joined us.
We were nestled in a corner by
Some of us encountered severe fog on the
way home for about two hours. However, by the time Aphrodisiac reached the MdR breakwater, it suddenly cleared at the entrance and
down the main channel.

Extraordinaire…hold your breath!
The long awaited results for the 3rd
Annual First Ever Dinghy Wine Tasting Competition of Marci’s Champagne Dinghy
Cruise have just been tabulated. But
first, can anyone answer this question?
Will Cherry Cove ever be the same again?
I don’t think so.
Fleet #1 Wine Lovers Extraordinaire…hold your breath! (Continued)
This has become a world-class event – a
virtual floating bacchanalia of good cheer, good food, and great wine. I am
sure the sound of all those laughing wine tasting revelers is still
reverberating through the hillsides. If you missed it, don’t miss White’s in
October or this event next year.
But let’s get down to serious
business…after all; the fortunes of many well known wineries may hang in the
balance here. We had a total of 18 wines entered in the competition – that is
almost twice the number in years past. To handle this monumental tasting task,
were 25 discriminating wine connoisseurs ready to go. And in keeping with
tradition, before we started, we filled our glasses with champagne provided by
Gary Willis and toasted our cruise’s namesake, Marci. Then the hard work began.
And here are the results.
The white wines were the
first to test:
Top honors in the white division goes to Bob and
Marlene White for their Fetzer pinot blanc from
Second place in the whites goes to Craig and Mary Ann
Fritsche who presented a pinot grigio-chardonnay
by Folonari of Italy.
The Third Spot in whites goes to Meryle
and Jim Mitchell for their Felsinger fume blanc from Temecula, closely followed by…
Now turning to the red
wines and there were a lot more of these:
The top prize in the red wine division goes to Peter
and Farrell Rosen and their Rodney Strong merlot from
Second place goes to Hal Avery and Fay Stevens for
their Barwang cabernet sauvignon from South Eastern
Australia. They were again closely followed in…
Third
place by Norm and
Charlene Perron’s Kendall Jackson syrah from
Fourth place, Eric and Cinamon
Sorensen’s entry, a Milton Park
And right behind, one point short of a tie,
was Francis Coppola rosso brought by Gary and Marci
Willis.
Of course, during all this tasting, there
was a seemingly endless parade of tasty goodies. The traditional food finale,
or course, was a plate of cheesecake and chocolates provided by Dave and Jan Polancic.
This was accompanied by almond flavored champagne brought by Gene and Joan Levinthal. Thanks go to everyone in attendance for making
this a first class event.

Cruise Preview: Plan for White’s Cove on October 17 – 19th!
The weather is always nice and the
hospitality of Balboa Yacht Club is superb. This cruise is always the best
organized, decorated and fun. There is even Yoga on the beach if you don’t want
to risk volleyball.
The pumpkin carving contest always
inspires creativity and generally some larceny when it comes to influencing the
judges. There will be gifts awarded appropriately or at least humorously. Bring
your dinner to BBQ at the BYC luxury facilities.
No more will we have to risk life and limb
maneuvering a dinghy onto shore. Even when the waves were quiet this was an
experience and sometimes leaving the beach was even more difficult. Now, we have use of the pier at the old
Girl Scout camp. Hooray!
There will be a $20 charge per boat using
the BYC facility and, of course, the mooring fee is additional. Hey, anchoring
is great on a sandy bottom. Craig Fritzsche is our BYC host and cruise
chairman. He needs a count of attendees, so, please, contact him.
