From the Captain of the Fleet:

We didn't have a meeting in April because of the “taxes due date” conflict. However many members of our fleet were active in sailing activities during the month. The largest gathering took place over the Easter weekend at Catalina Island. Santa Monica Windjammers Yacht Club, to which many of our members belong, held a rendezvous at the Isthmus. It was hosted by Norm and Charlene Perron, with many activities and events, enjoyed by all. In addition, there was the Easter egg hunt for the local children sponsored the Corsair Yacht which brought members Jim and Meryle Mitchell up from Temecula. We also meet some of our others members over in Cherry Cove.

                     Catalina Factory Tour and Dinner

Our factory tour is scheduled for Thursday, May 22nd. The tour starts promptly at 4 pm, so please be there a little early. Even if you have been on the tour before, you will find it interesting to see the changes and learn of new ideas from Catalina. After the tour, we will meet at a BJ’s Restaurant and have dinner. If you can’t make the tour, join us at dinner. The Catalina Factory address, directions and the address of the restaurant are listed below.

                    Flare Day Shoot Off

As reported in the Argonaut, the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary will hold a flare shoot-off between 11 am and 1 pm, Saturday, May 17th, at Dockweiler Beach. This area is just south of the south Ballona Creek Jetty.  Boat owners can bring any unused expired distress flares and, after a brief instruction, can shoot them off safely. It is a good opportunity to dispose of your expired flares and have the experience of firing them off.

Your Fleet Captain, Hal Avery

Cruise – King Harbor Yacht Club – May 31st and June 1st

As cruise chairman for 2003, I want to remind everyone of our upcoming cruise to King Harbor Yacht Club on Saturday 5/31 & Sunday 6/1.

Aphrodisiac will arrive early Friday evening and drop a hook to be the primary anchor boat. On Saturday morning, I will monitor channel 71 for arriving Fleet members, please call when you're sailing by the Hermosa pier.

You can always call me on the DSC radio, my MMSI is 338010616 (same # it's been for a few years). I request we're all tied-up by 4 pm, so please plan accordingly. Fleet #1 Burgees or yacht club burgees are required. KHYC. KHYC originally said they would charge us $.50/ft for each boat. They have said that in the past and never charged us, but we should be ready if they do.

Late Saturday afternoon around 5 pm we should have a happy hour on the docks. It would be great if some of you bring some munchies. The rest should have a dish to share as we have use of the downstairs room to eat dinner. When you RSVP, please indicate which you plan to bring. We also have access to the BBQ's to cook, so bring your own dinner.

Sunday morning around 9:30 KHYC will serve breakfast. There is a reasonable charge per breakfast. We should plan to break-up the raft around 11:30 and enjoy a nice sail home.

As in the past, this will be a Med-tie arrangement, with every 2nd or 3rd boat dropping an anchor. As you RSVP, please indicate if you are comfortable anchoring and don't mind practicing dropping an anchor in 15-20' of water. I plan to have my dinghy and outboard ready to assist in any way I can. If you haven't practiced backing up straight lately, you should try it, as everyone must back to the dock close to the other boats.

BE SURE TO BRING ALL YOUR FENDERS - THE BIGGER THE BETTER - AND AT LEAST 2 LINES LONGER THAN THE LENGTH OF YOUR VESSEL, IN ADDITION TO 4 DOCK LINES.

I NEED RSVP's and will be available until mid-afternoon to help everyone med-tie.
